Ramon Magsaysay Laureates spearhead Caravan of Good Governance

Here is an article for “Kaya Natin” Movement

Ramon Magsaysay Awardees for Government Service, Gov. Grace Padaca (Isabela) and Mayor Jesse Robredo (Naga City) spearheaded Kaya Natin’s Caravan of Good Governance held in different areas around Metro Manila last September 4.

Kaya Natin which was initially convened by Harvey Keh of the Ateneo de Manila University-School of Government is a movement for genuine change and ethical leadership that also counts outstanding local government leaders Gov. Eddie Panlilio (Pampanga), Gov. Teddy Baguilat, Jr. (Ifugao) and Mayor Sonia Lorenzo (San Isidro, Nueva Ecija) among its founding members.

The Caravan of Good Governance aims to inspire Filipinos to be more involved and proactive in promoting good governance practices such as effective delivery of basic services, transparency and accountability of public officials in their respective communities.

During the caravan, the Kaya Natin leaders visited and shared their stories of hope to more than a thousand college students in Miriam College, Quezon City and the Mapua Institute of Technology-Makati Campus. Aside from this, Kaya Natin also met with business leaders from the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP). During the said meeting, Kaya Natin and MAP explored possible joint activities and programs that would help encourage more Filipino leaders to practice good governance and ethical leadership.

To cap the day’s activities, the Ayala Young Leaders Alumni (AYLA) network and the Ayala Foundation gathered more than 500 student leaders and young professionals at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) to meet and listen to the best practices of the Kaya Natin leaders. While meeting the different groups, Gov. Padaca always emphasized the importance of getting the Filipino youth to register and volunteer to ensure clean and honest elections in 2010. Mayor Robredo on the other hand shared with the audience how he was able to develop policies and programs in Naga City that ensured greater participation, cooperation and engagement of people’s organizations and civil society groups. Moreover, Mayor Robredo also shared that in order to promote transparency and accountability in his government, every single centavo spent by his office can be seen at the official website of the city.

During the open forum, Gov. Panlilio was asked about his reaction to the recall initiative being filed against him by his political opponents in Pampanga. Gov. Panlilio said he was confident that it was bound to fail and lamented that this move is politically- motivated considering that despite him being in office for only 14 months he has already managed to increase quarry collections by more than 10 times compared to the previous governors and has curbed corruption practices when it comes to the awarding of infrastructure projects to private contractors.

As the last session drew to a close, Gov. Baguilat, Jr. and Mayor Lorenzo echoed the sentiment of Kaya Natin that despite all the problems in the country today, there is still much to hope for especially if every Filipino would take time to volunteer in activities that would help towards electing effective and morally-upright leaders for our country.

At the end of the caravan, more than 600 students and young professionals signed up to join Kaya Natin. The Kaya Natin Caravan of Good Governance will be visiting UP-Diliman, Adamson University, University of Asia and the Pacific and the Ateneo de Manila Professional Schools this month.
